Red tape is a series of unnecessary actions and tasks that the government or an organization requires you to do in order to get something done. Red tape is a form of corruption that affects everyone from a simple driver’s license application up to complex business and working permits.
Scenario 1: Let’s say you are applying for your driver’s license. A fixer approaches you and asks you for P500 to easily get the process done. The presence of a fixer or paying a fixer to speed up the process is red tape and is against the law.
Scenario 2: For example, in order to apply for a permit, you will only have to accomplish 5 steps. The office personnel asks you money to get the job done but you refused. He then requires you additional tasks that are not included in the original 5 steps. Asking for a bribe and not following the proper protocol is red tape.
Scenario 3: A government office does not have a citizen’s charter where all information regarding various transactions should be placed. That is against the law.
